Jaeger-LeCoultre operates as a complete manufacture in Le Sentier, Vallée de Joux. Every component of every calibre, from balance springs to escapements, is produced under one roof. The company has developed more than 1,200 distinct calibres since 1833, the largest reference library in horology.

The Reverso, introduced in 1931, was conceived for British army polo players in India who needed a watch that could survive the impact of a mallet. Cesar de Trey commissioned the design from Jaeger-LeCoultre, and the rectangular swivel case became one of the few unmistakably Art Deco wristwatch silhouettes still in production. The line splits into Classique (time-only), Duetto (two dials, day and night), Grande Taille (larger case), and Grande Duo (dual time zone).

The Master collection is the maison's round-cased dress family. The Master Ultra Thin Moon 39mm pairs a 4.9mm-thick case with the calibre 925, an automatic movement under 4mm itself. The Master Calendar adds a complete calendar with moonphase; recent releases in meteorite dial command particular collector attention. The Master Hometime is the second-time-zone reference, with day and night indicators visible at a glance.

Beyond Honeyrock's current selection, JLC also produces the Polaris (dive and sport), Duomètre (split-train chronographs), and the Atmos (the perpetually-wound air-pressure clock). These are reference points for understanding the depth of the maison's catalogue.

What separates Jaeger-LeCoultre at the movement level

JLC's standing rests on two facts. First, it has supplied movements or finished components to Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, and Vacheron Constantin at various points in the twentieth century. The shorthand "the watchmaker's watchmaker" is not marketing language: it describes a historical reality, documented in archival records held in the Vallée de Joux.

Second, the manufacture invests in calibres that other houses have stopped producing. The calibre 849, a manual-winding movement at 1.85mm thick, has been in production since 1907. The calibre 925 in the Master Ultra Thin Moon achieves 4mm thickness with automatic winding and moonphase. The calibre 939 in the Master Hometime adds dual time without enlarging the case.

The Reverso uses dedicated rectangular calibres rather than fitting round movements into oval housings: the calibre 822 (manual) and 826 (automatic two-dial Duetto) are purpose-built for the case shape. The Grande Reverso Duo uses the calibre 854, a dual-time movement with separate day-night indicators on each face.

Finishing follows standard high-grade conventions: Geneva stripes (côtes de Genève) on bridges, perlage on the mainplate, polished bevels on visible edges, and engraved calibre numbers stamped at production. Independent verification of calibre stamps against JLC's reference archive is one of the authentication steps Honeyrock performs.

Buying pre-owned Jaeger-LeCoultre

The pre-owned market for JLC sits in a particular position: respected by collectors, undervalued relative to the maison's mechanical accomplishments. A pre-owned Master Ultra Thin Moon in full-set condition typically trades at a meaningful discount to its retail equivalent, despite carrying the same calibre 925.

Five points matter when assessing condition and authenticity:

Calibre stamp: The movement should display the calibre number, JLC signature, and serial number. Discrepancies between the case-back reference and the movement calibre are a red flag.
Reverso card and box: The Reverso shipped with a specific guarantee card format. Original card and box add meaningfully to value; replacements are harder to verify than for round-cased Masters.
Case finishing: Aggressive polishing softens the Reverso's geometric edges, particularly the bracelet-to-case transition. The Master line's lugs are similarly susceptible. Original sharp edges are preferred to over-polished cases.
Dial originality: Meteorite, sunburst, and ardoise dials should match the reference's archived specification. Re-dialed examples exist and are detectable under magnification.
Service history: A JLC-stamped service record (or boutique service receipt) confirms the calibre has been maintained by the manufacture rather than a third party.
