What 150 Metres Really Means: Watch Water Resistance in Summer

    A water resistance rating is the result of a static pressure test conducted on a sample in a laboratory. It is not a statement about how deep you can swim, and it is not a permanent property of the watch. Both of those sentences are supported by the standard itself, and both are routinely ignored by the market.

    Summer is when the gap between the number on the caseback and the reality on the wrist becomes expensive. This guide sets out what the ratings mean, what manufacturers actually instruct, and where the genuine risks sit. Where the evidence does not support a common claim, we say so rather than repeat it.

    What ISO 22810 actually specifies

    ISO 22810:2010, "Horology: Water-resistant watches", is the general standard. It superseded ISO 2281 and remains current. It sets out test methods and the markings a manufacturer is permitted to apply. Diving watches are explicitly outside its scope.

    Three of its tests matter to a summer wearer:

    • Condensation test: the watch is heated to 40 to 45 degrees Celsius, cool water at 18 to 25 degrees is applied to the glass, and the glass is wiped after about a minute. Internal condensation is a failure.
    • Overpressure test: the watch is fully immersed, pressure is raised over one minute to a minimum overpressure of 2 bar, and held for 10 minutes.
    • Thermal shock test: successive immersion at 10 cm depth, five minutes at 40 degrees, five at 20 degrees, five at 40 degrees, with transfers under a minute.

    Why 30 metres does not mean 30 metres

    Four separate reasons, each of which stands on its own:

    1. The test is static. Your wrist is not. Swinging an arm into a pool, taking a wave on the wrist, or stepping from a hot shower into cool air produces pressure spikes that exceed the test parameters.
    2. The rating is a test pressure, not a duty cycle. An indication of test pressure expressed as water depth does not mean the watch was designed for repeated long-term use at that depth.
    3. Only a sample is tested. Under ISO 22810 a small sample is tested, not every watch, which leaves a small likelihood that any individual watch does not meet the certified depth.
    4. The same number means different things at different brands. IWC's own published guidance maps 1 bar to splash resistance, 3 to 5 bar to swimming or skiing, 6 to 12 bar to water sports and snorkelling, and reserves scuba to 12 bar and above.

    ISO 6425 and the word DIVER'S

    ISO 6425:2018 is the dive watch standard, and it is a different order of requirement. Watches conforming to it are marked with the word DIVER'S precisely to distinguish them from watches that carry a depth number but were not built or tested to the same protocol.

    That last line is the most important practical difference between the two standards, and it is rarely mentioned.

    One correction we will make to our own industry: it is commonly stated that ISO 6425 requires a screw-down crown. The standard requires crown and pusher security under load, applying a 5 N force perpendicular to the crown during immersion, rather than mandating the mechanism by name. Screw-down crowns are how manufacturers meet it, not what the clause says.

    Reading the caseback

    • "DIVER'S 300M": certified to ISO 6425. Individually tested. Tested at 375 metres equivalent pressure. Bezel, darkness legibility, salt water, magnetism, shock and thermal shock all in scope.
    • "300M" or "Water Resistant 300M": tested to ISO 22810 or the manufacturer's own protocol. Sample tested. None of the above requirements attaches to the marking.

    Two watches with identical depth numbers on the dial can therefore sit on opposite sides of a meaningful line. This is exactly why an Aqua Terra at 150 metres is a superb summer watch and still not a dive instrument: no rotating timing bezel, no ISO 6425 claim.

    What manufacturers actually instruct

    Quoted from published manufacturer guidance rather than paraphrased from dealer blogs.

    Salt water and chlorine

    Breitling: "Following every immersion in chlorinated or salt water, carefully rinse your watch under a thin stream of tap water (not powerful), and dry it with an absorbent cloth."

    Omega: "Always rinse your watch with tap water after swimming in salt water."

    Seiko adds a detail the others omit: wash it in still water in a sink or container, and "avoid placing it directly under running water from a faucet. The water pressure from a faucet is sufficient to result in moisture penetration inside the watch."

    Heat, hot tubs and saunas

    Omega and Breitling both set an upper limit around 60 degrees Celsius and warn against extreme temperature changes. Breitling specifically flags going from sun exposure straight into water, "as this may cause the glass shattering".

    Seiko is the clearest source on the hot tub question: "Do not wear the watch while taking a bath or a sauna. Steam, soap or some components of a hot spring may accelerate the deterioration of water resistance performance."

    We will not tell you that heat thins the lubricants or degrades the gasket elastomers in a specified way. No manufacturer or technical source we could locate quantifies that. What is documented is that manufacturers set a temperature ceiling, that Seiko attributes water resistance loss to ageing of gaskets, and that steam accelerates it.

    The crown, which is where most water actually gets in

    Seiko, verbatim: "Do not put a water resistant watch in water while the crown is pulled out. Do not turn or pull out the crown when the watch is wet." And on maintenance: "Turn the crown from time to time in order to prevent corrosion of the crown and maintain the flexibility of the gasket."

    Omega: "Screw it in carefully to ensure that no water enters the mechanism."

    A screw-down crown that has not been fully seated is the single most common cause of water ingress on a watch that was otherwise perfectly capable.

    Leather and alligator straps

    Guidance here is unanimous across three manufacturers.

    Seiko: "Refrain from wearing a watch with a leather band while bathing, swimming and working with water even if the watch itself is water-resistant." And: leather is "more susceptible to discoloration and deterioration from moisture, sweat and direct sunlight than metal bands".

    Breitling: protect leather from "water, perspiration, damp, grease, perfume, cosmetics or chemicals, and avoid excessive exposure to the sun". Breitling recommends metal bracelets or rubber straps for water activities.

    Omega classifies colour and material change in leather, textile and rubber straps as normal wear, not covered by warranty.

    On sunscreen specifically: no manufacturer names it. Breitling names cosmetics, Omega names greasy substances and cosmetic products. Sunscreen sits squarely within that category, but we are not going to attribute a sunscreen-specific warning to a brand that never issued one. Keep it off the leather, and rinse the bracelet.

    Salt water and steel: the real corrosion risk

    Chloride ions attack the passivating oxide layer that protects stainless steel, producing localised pitting. Seawater and chlorinated pool water do this by the same mechanism.

    Seiko's guidance is the most specific published statement we found: "Even stainless steel bands develop rust due to some corrosion or perspiration accumulating between the band segments. This applies especially to expensive solid bracelets with gaps between the segments that are relatively narrow." Seiko also notes that titanium bracelets often use stainless pins, which can rust, and that advanced corrosion can cause pins to protrude or fall out.

    The remedy is unglamorous and effective: rinse, work fresh water into the link gaps with a soft brush while protecting the head, and dry the gaps properly rather than leaving the bracelet damp in a drawer.

    Two claims we are not going to make

    Summer watch care articles reliably repeat two things that we could not substantiate.

    That sunlight kills modern lume. Super-LumiNova is a strontium aluminate pigment doped with europium and dysprosium. Because no chemical change occurs across a charge and discharge cycle, the pigments theoretically retain their afterglow indefinitely, and intensity loss occurs "very slowly, almost imperceptibly". What actually harms it is water: "prolonged contact with water or high humidity... creates a hydroxide layer that negatively affects the light emission intensity". The risk to modern lume in summer is ingress, not sunshine.

    That UV fades dials. The tropical dial phenomenon is well known among collectors, but we could not locate a manufacturer or technical source establishing it as a documented mechanism for modern dial finishes. We will report it as collector observation and leave it there.

    Service and pressure testing

    Seiko's framing is the one to internalise: "The water resistance of a watch is not permanently guaranteed. It is affected by the ageing of gaskets or deformation of watch parts due to an accidental shock."

    If a watch goes in the sea or a pool with any regularity, an annual pressure test is cheap insurance measured against the cost of a movement that has taken salt water.

    What the market does in summer

    There is one properly sourced finding on watch market seasonality, and it is about what people buy rather than how much they pay. Chrono24 research reported in September 2025 found that summer shifts the mix:

    • Dive watches gain 6.2 percentage points of share in summer
    • Coloured dials gain 4.4 percentage points
    • Dress watches lose 7.0 percentage points
    • Largest single-model summer increases include the Breitling Superocean Heritage II 42 at plus 79.2 per cent and the Rolex GMT-Master 16750 at plus 70.5 per cent

    Balazs Ferenczi of Chrono24 framed it precisely: "Even though the watch market only shows moderate seasonality overall, we see clear shifts towards sportier designs and bolder colours in the summer."

    There is no published dataset showing that summer changes how much the market transacts or what it pays. Anyone telling you otherwise is extrapolating.

    A practical summer protocol

    1. Check the crown is fully screwed down before any water contact. Every time.
    2. Leather and alligator come off before the pool, the sea and the shower, regardless of the case rating.
    3. Rinse in still fresh water after salt or chlorine, not under a running tap. Dry the link gaps.
    4. Avoid the sun-to-cold-water transition. Let the watch equalise.
    5. No saunas, no hot tubs, no steam rooms.
    6. Never operate the crown or pushers while the watch is wet.
    7. If it swims regularly, have it pressure tested once a year.
    8. If condensation appears under the glass, stop wearing it and have it opened. That is water inside a movement, and time is the variable that decides the repair bill.

    Frequently asked questions

    Can I swim with a 30 metre watch?

    No. 30 metres is splash and rain resistance. It is not specified for immersion.

    Can I swim with a 100 metre watch?

    Generally yes, for swimming and surface water sport, provided the crown is screwed down and the gaskets are sound. It is not a diving instrument unless it carries the DIVER'S marking.

    What does 150 metres mean on an Omega Aqua Terra?

    It means the watch passed a 15 bar static pressure test and carries a screw-in crown. It covers swimming comfortably. It has no rotating timing bezel and no ISO 6425 certification, so it is not a dive watch.

    Is chlorine or salt water worse for a watch?

    Both attack steel through the same chloride mechanism. The practical difference is that pool exposure tends to be repeated and prolonged, while sea exposure is usually shorter but combined with sand and heat. Rinse after either.

    Does water resistance wear out?

    Yes. Gaskets age and deform, and a shock can compromise a seal. Water resistance is a maintained property, not a permanent one.

    Can I wear a leather strap in the sea?

    No. Every manufacturer we checked advises against water contact for leather, irrespective of the case rating. Fit a rubber or steel bracelet for summer and keep the leather for the evening.
