Product Description

The Story

In the 1970s and 1980s, His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said al Said of Oman commissioned a remarkable series of timepieces from the most prestigious Swiss watchmaking houses, gifting them to dignitaries, military officers, ambassadors, and close associates of the Royal Court. Rolex, Patek Philippe, Omega, and IWC all produced these special order pieces, distinguished by the application of the Khanjar, the ceremonial dagger that serves as the national emblem of the Sultanate of Oman, executed in vibrant red on the dial. Today, the Sultan of Oman gifted watches represent one of the most exclusive and well-documented categories in vintage horological collecting, with examples regularly featured in major auctions at Christie's, Sotheby's, and Phillips.

This particular example is an IWC Yacht Club II Automatic, reference 3212, in stainless steel and 14k yellow gold. The Yacht Club II line represents IWC's interpretation of the integrated sport-luxury aesthetic that defined the era, with its octagonal bezel and integrated bracelet showing clear sympathy with the design language pioneered by Genta and his contemporaries at Audemars Piguet and Patek Philippe.

The Craft

The watch is powered by the IWC Calibre 3258, an automatic movement with 34 jewels, a flat balance spring, and oscillating at 28,800 vibrations per hour. This was IWC's high-grade in-house calibre family of the period, known for its reliability and refined finishing including circular graining and Geneva stripes. The case construction combines brushed stainless steel with 14k yellow gold (585) elements on the bezel and bracelet centre links, creating the distinctive two-tone aesthetic that defined the late 1970s sport-luxury category.

Provenance and Authentication

This watch is accompanied by an original IWC Schaffhausen Museum Extract, issued on 13 April 2026 and signed by Dr. David Seyffer, Curator of the IWC Museum, and Elvira Judas of IWC Customer Service. The Extract confirms the watch was delivered new on 30 April 1979 and, critically, explicitly states that the Sultan of Oman emblem on the dial is original. This factory authentication is the highest possible level of provenance for a Sultan of Oman watch, eliminating any uncertainty regarding the authenticity of the dial, a concern often raised with this category given the existence of aftermarket applications. For the serious collector of Khanjar watches, an IWC Museum-authenticated example with verified original dial is precisely the standard of provenance to seek.
